Glossary

Fans of JPop and KPop have their own special words, abbreviations and slang, just like most fields of interest. This glossary is to help new (and experienced) fans of this music communicate. Please suggest additions and corrections in the Glossary topic in the forum.

AV - Stands for "adult video", or pornography.
B-Side
- The term itself was more popular when records where more commonly used and it was literally flipped with different content that could be played on each side. When compact disks gained more popularity, the terms became less meaningful, however they are still used to describe a coupling track to a single. There are many different types of songs that could be included onto a single as a B-Side such as songs that are unsuitable for the album, a more 'radio friendly' version of the song, a different version of the A-Side (a remix, acoustic, live, a cappella, different language, etc.), a song that was completed after the album's release, a song that was considered not good enough to be on the album, a song that's style was unsuitable for the album or, a song from the same album that the record label decided not to release by itself.
Balloons - Groups geared toward teenage audiences designate themselves with an official color. during concerts and performances, you'll see a sea of orange during Shinhwa performances, and lots of red during DBSK performances, etc.
Best/"Best of" Album
- A compilation album of an artist's work, usually previously released singles or popular tracks.
Cyworld
- Korean equivalent to the American myspace. many Korean stars maintain one.
Dorama
- Derived from the English word "drama". It refers to Asian drama series or soap operas.
Engrish
- Said to be coined by Engrish.com. It basically means butchered/corrupted English found in non-English-speaking places around the world, including J-Pop lyrics. It either makes no grammatical sense or simply makes no sense at all. Random (or somewhat random) English is considered cool in Japan, even though fluency is not too common (which, of course, gives us Engrish).
Gasoo - singer (Korean)
Gravure
- An idol that usually does bikini shoots. Not the same as an AV idol (See AV).
Obi
- A paper strip wrapped around edge of a CD or DVD. From the Japanese word meaning "belt".

- is a derisive term used to refer to people with obsessive hobbies, most commonly manga, anime or JPop.
Popera
- A way to describe a genre of music that is mixed with the sounds of pop and opera in one. Popular artists such as SG Wannabe and SeeYa are said to fit this genre.

PV - Promotional Video, a music video.
Seiyuu
- Voice actor/actress. This term is also used by many non-Japanese fans of animes, games, etc rather their native term. Many seiyuu have careers in singing as well. Popular seiyuu includes Megumi Hayashibara and Maaya Sakamoto.
U-15
- "Under 15"; refers to idols under the age of 15.
